Brexit is the hottest topic in the media at the moment, will we strike a deal? Will we not? Who knows really? Now we are seeing an abrupt fall in the flow of EU nationals into the UK, which is coinciding with a drop in the quantity and suitability of job applicants across all sectors.
Over the past decade, the UK has continued to see a huge influx of EU nationals, leading to a steady increase of EU-born workers in the UK. However, since the announcement of Brexit, the demand for labour has continued to boom whilst labour supply is failing to keep pace. So what does this mean for us? With fewer EU nationals entering the country there is a skills shortage that is beginning to bite. Alex Fleming (Country Head and President of Staffing and Solutions, Adecco Group UK and Ireland) explained that:
“With Brexit looming, we’re seeing a talent shortage and a more competitive marketplace. Retention remains key; it’s imperative that employers develop and promote their staff, so they don’t fall short and feel the impact of the dwindling growth of the UK’s talent pool”.
The UK’s health and social care industry relies on the free movement of EU nationals, and with 1 in 6 adult social care roles being filled by carers from outside England, there is no doubt that the decline in applicants is having a negative impact on this industry. How do we know this? Government officials report that the care sector is one of the nation’s fastest growing occupations, yet, Brexit could potentially leave the UK short of 380,000 care workers by 2026. But now, people from the EU are likely to face the same immigration rules as others after Brexit. The BBC have reported that the cap on immigrants into the UK (currently set at 20,700 a year) “has resulted in thousands of…NHS candidates being denied visas” into the UK. Our country is already suffering with a shortage of staff, meaning caregivers and nurses are left feeling “like a workhorse at times”, after working 80-hour weeks. Why is this allowed to happen? Why are we letting our health and social care workers burn out? Why are we capping the number of EU nationals into the UK, when they bring skills that our nation needs?
What can technology do to help?
Matt Hancock, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, announced a £200 million injection of funds into the NHS and social care system, whilst this is welcome, it’s a small investment considering their current needs. Hancock has also launched a new advisory platform. This board gives your team of caregivers or nurses or healthcare professionals the opportunity to share their ideas, thoughts and concerns directly with Hancock himself.
